In September, Lajer Pote Permaculture was delighted to host a volunteer from Colombia named Andreas Ruiz, He stayed in our village for two meaningful weeks, living together with the local community and learning about local wisdom, culture, and sustainable farming. From the first day, Andreas showed a deep curiosity about how farmers in our village live in harmony with nature.
Every morning, he joined us in the garden—planting vegetables, watering guava trees, making compost, and learning about natural pest control. He was eager to understand how local farmers combine traditional knowledge with permaculture principles. His dedication and willingness to learn inspired everyone in our team.
In addition to farming, Andreas also shared his own knowledge. As someone with a background in biology and agriculture, he taught local children about the beauty of nature, ecosystems, and how plants grow. His lessons were fun and interactive; the children enjoyed drawing leaves, observing insects, and learning how to take care of the environment.
During his stay, Andreas didn’t just work and teach—he became part of the community. He joined in evening talks with the villagers, learned to cook local food, and even tried wearing a sarong during special events. He said one of his favorite moments was listening to the sound of the azan from the mosque and watching the sunrise over the rice fields.
Andreas’s presence brought warmth, new perspectives, and joy to our village. His visit reminded us that learning and sharing can cross languages and borders. We are very thankful for his kindness and energy, and we hope that someday he will return to Lajer Pote—his second home in Indonesia.
